We are proud to say that we believe Buckinghamshire is one of the prettiest parts of our country. From our rolling hills, picturesque villages and of course the winding canals, our home is steeped in history and breathtaking views.

However, to keep the county this beautiful, legislation has to be put in place. In fact, Buckinghamshire has over 200 conservation areas, including Amersham old town, Chenies and Latimer, and the centre of High Wycombe. The purpose of these conservation areas is predominantly to protect our local history and the effort that’s previously gone into making these streets as pretty as they are.

If your home sits within a conservation area, choosing new windows can feel a little daunting. However, the time eventually comes when replacements are necessary, whether your primary goal is to lower energy bills, eliminate draughts, or simply refresh your home’s appearance. The good news is that it is possible, and there are products especially designed to be conservation area compliant.

At Premier Windows, we work exclusively across Aylesbury and the wider Buckinghamshire area and slightly further afield from time to time. That means we understand exactly what your local council expects, and we supply and install the right products to match, including the luxurious Residence Collection, traditional sliding sash windows and beautiful wood-effect casement windows. Let’s walk through everything you need to know.

Do I live inside a conservation area?

Not sure whether your home falls inside one of these protected zones? It’s easy to check. Heritage check is a really good site, you just need to input your postcode and it will let you know if your house is inside a conservation area. You can also search the government’s Planning Portal, or get in touch with us and we’ll let you know! We deal with these cases day in day out, so will be able to give you a confident answer.

Here are a few well-known conservation areas across Buckinghamshire to give you a feel for them. Please note, it’s not the whole village/town classified as a conservation area, rather the specific area mentioned!

–          Aylesbury (Old Town): Famed for its historic streets and characterful period properties.

–          Wendover Village Centre: A picturesque, heritage-rich hub brimming with charm.

–          Winslow High Street & Core: Renowned for its beautifully preserved Georgian and Victorian buildings.

–          Buckingham Centre: Steeped in architectural character and rich historic interest.

–          Great Missenden: The historic heart of a classic Chilterns village setting.

If your property is listed too, that adds another layer of rules. A listed building always requires formal consent before any window replacement work begins.

What does it mean if I live inside a conservation area and want to upgrade my windows?

Conservation rules exist to protect the area’s character. The idea is simple: keep streets looking as charming and consistent as they’ve always been.

For you, this means your new windows need to be sympathetic to the look of your property and the character of the street.

The approval process usually involves submitting an application form (we can help with this, or sort it for you), detailed drawings and detailed specifications of your proposed windows. There’s often a consultation period built in, which can mean a few weeks of delay. With careful planning, it’s all very manageable.

Here are the key things your conservation officer will be looking at.

Colour and finish

Bright, modern shades may often be more tightly regulated. Heritage colours like cream, Chartwell Green and traditional woodgrain effects tend to be favoured because they blend in with the area’s character.

Style and opening

Your replacement windows should mirror your existing windows. If your home has timber sash windows, the council will usually expect a sash-style replacement. If you have timber casement windows, a casement design is the way to go.

Sightlines and glazing

Slim sightlines matter enormously. Original windows from the Georgian and Edwardian eras had narrow frames, so bulky modern profiles can look out of place. This is where slim double glazing comes into its own, giving you modern performance without spoiling the traditional design.

Glazing bars and detailing

Period touches like Georgian astragal bars, sash horns and authentic handles all help your windows sit comfortably within heritage surroundings.

Which replacement windows can I install if I live inside a conservation area?

We offer three brilliant solutions that regularly win approval in even the strictest conservation areas. Here’s how each one works.

Residence 9 windows

The Residence 9 is a beautiful uPVC window that is designed to look just like 19th-century timber flush casement windows. It opens outwards like a standard casement (with friction stays, you probably use casements every day), with the opening sash sitting completely flush against the frame when closed, giving it that seamless, traditional appearance.

It’s known for how convincing the timber finish is. Because it copies historical dimensions and detailing so faithfully, including timber-style butt joints and an authentic exterior weatherbar, it’s routinely approved for use in conservation areas.

Its standout feature is the frame packed with nine internal chambers. These little air pockets trap warmth inside, slashing heat loss and keeping your rooms cosy.

Choose Residence 9 windows if:

  • You want the most authentic timber-replica without the upkeep of wooden windows
  • Energy efficiency is a top priority for you (meaning lower bills and a warmer home)
  • You live in a particularly strict conservation area
  • Security matters, thanks to its glass that’s physically bonded into the sash

You’ll have over 23 colours to choose from, including heritage favourites like Cotswold Biscuit, Vintage Cream, Golden Oak and Chartwell Green, plus contemporary options such as Anthracite Grey. Dual-colour finishes let you have one shade inside and another outside.

You can pick 28mm double glazing or high-performance 44mm triple glazing. Triple glazing reaches an incredible U-value of 0.8 W/m²K. The U-value simply measures how well a window holds heat in, and the lower the number, the warmer your home. For hardware, we offer period-accurate Monkey Tail handles, Pear-Drop handles and traditional peg stays.

Vertical sliding sash windows

Our vertical sliding sash window is the modern answer to the classic timber sash. Both the top and bottom sashes glide up and down for lovely balanced airflow. Cleverly, they also tilt inwards, so you can clean the outside glass while standing safely indoors.

Its main USP is the super-smooth glide, powered by hidden spring balances rather than the heavy weights and pulleys of old.

Choose vertical sliding sash windows if:

  • Your home has original sash windows you want to replicate
  • You own a Georgian, Victorian or Edwardian property
  • You love the traditional up-and-down sliding action
  • Easy, safe cleaning appeals to you

Choose from classic smooth White or authentic timber-effect woodgrains like Rosewood, Golden Oak and Anthracite Grey. They come with 24mm or 28mm A-rated double glazing filled with argon gas, which improves warmth and cuts down outside noise.

Period accessories include decorative sash horns, sash lifts and high-security fitch locks.

Wood-effect casement windows

Our casement windows are available in uPVC and aluminium windows, with the former able to be finished in a huge range of beautiful woodgrain finishes. These give the depth and texture of painted timber without any of the sanding, painting or maintenance. It opens outwards and comes in either crisp chamfered lines or softer sculptured profiles.

It’s known for its fantastic value, offering the heritage timber look at a very competitive price. Its main USP is that brilliant balance of cost and quality, reinforced internally with steel or recycled composite material for lasting strength.

Choose wood-effect casement windows if:

  • You want a heritage look on a sensible budget
  • Low maintenance is important to you
  • Your home suits a classic casement style
  • You’d like flexibility between traditional and modern aesthetics

Pick from an extensive palette of woodgrain foils, including Irish Oak, Walnut, Cream, Chartwell Green and the ever-popular Anthracite Grey.

They are brilliant at reducing heat transfer thanks to their tight seals, and in layman’s terms this means your home will keep the warmth in in the winter and repel it in the summer.

Every window includes high-security multi-point locking, and we can add Georgian bars for an authentic multi-pane look.
