Gary Warby, Director Premier Windows, discusses why the government should support for energy efficient home improvements.

Thousands of homes throughout Aylesbury remain poorly insulated, leaving those who live within them out of pocket and collectively contributing to the UK’s high carbon emissions.

That’s why government support for measures to improve the energy efficiency of our homes should be a must.

Installing loft and wall insulation and energy efficient windows and doors can have a huge impact on the thermal efficiency of properties. This would give cash back to families but also support economic growth.

But despite this, the UK’s energy policies seem to have ground to a halt. Funding for home improvements more or less dried up with the Government’s decision to scrap the Green Deal in July last year and with no clear direction.

According to a recent report from, as many as 10 million British families live in a home with a leaking roof, damp walls or rotting windows. It highlights that damp and mould remains a particular problem in properties with old windows.

There are clear implications here for health. If you look at the potential on-cost of treating related conditions, say breathing problems, government home improvement grants, could deliver big savings not just for homeowners and in CO2 emissions but far more widely.

The case for investing in insulation and the energy efficiency of your property stacks-up regardless of the availability of government grants for energy efficient home improvements.

For example, according to the Energy Saving Trust, heat lost through windows accounts for around 25 per cent of the total energy lost from your home. It suggests that new windows and doors could save homeowners up to £160 a year in heating bills over old or single glazed windows.

Premier Windows, offers an extensive range of energy efficient double-glazed and triple-glazed windows and doors. This includes thermally efficient 1.2W/m².K (the measure of heat loss) or Window Energy Rated A+ rated double-glazed windows and ultra-energy efficient triple-glazed windows, which will achieve U-values as low as 0.8W/m².K.

The point is that the money that homeowners save from this type of energy efficient home improvement, is then there to be spent on other goods and services.

At the same time, it will also make a much more significant impact on the energy efficiency of our homes, cutting CO2 emissions alongside fuel bills!
